These four charts show where AI companies could go next in the US
While the impact of AI on tech hubs like San Francisco and Boston is already being felt, AI proponents believe it will transform work everywhere, and in every industry. The report uses various proxies for what the researchers call "AI readiness" to document how unevenly this supposed transformation is taking place. Here are four charts to help understand where that could matter. Brookings divides US cities into five categories based on how ready they are to adopt AI-related industries and job offerings. To do so, it looked at local talent pool development, innovations in local institutions, and adoption potential among local companies.

What 'work of the future' means to 5 business leaders
Leaders preparing for work of the future often focus on data and technology, which are already fueling artificial intelligence and algorithms that are transforming the workplace. But human workers shouldn't get lost in the shuffle. Savvy managers are arming employees with the skills they need to integrate these new technologies into existing workflows. At the same time, leaders anticipate that the challenges and opportunities that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, like remote work, will continue and become standard, though there is still a lot of work to be done in that area. "We are at the most important pivot point of the past couple years," said Dannielle Appelhans, LGO '11, chief operating officer at biotech Rubius Therapeutics.

Miami: A Tech Hub on the Rise
Tech hubs are communities that are geared toward educating and encouraging new talent, and also providing space for the growth and acceleration of high-tech businesses. We had the chance to talk to local tech leaders about Miami as a tech hub at the Miami AI and Machine Learning Meetup Week, and discuss the advantages of being located in a tech ecosystem as well as what the future will bring for Miami. Tech hubs exist as an ecosystem to facilitate collaboration between startups and large technology-based companies. Tech hubs make interaction, networking, innovation and co-innovation easily accessible for community members. Companies located within a tech ecosystem will benefit from the free flow of talent, ideas, resources, workspace, and networking for accelerated growth.

The Government Might Borrow a Move From Amazon to Turn More Cities Into Seattle
Three years ago, Amazon's HQ2 competition showed the world just how many local politicians would happily sell their first-born child if it meant bringing tech jobs to their community. Hundreds of cities and regions made bids to land the everything store's new headquarters, offering all manner of subsidies and perks to one of the most powerful corporations on Earth with the hope that, by the grace of Jeff Bezos, they could one day become the next Seattle. Most of them never had a chance. Amazon largely ignored the offers from midsized contenders, instead selecting New York City and the Virginia suburbs outside of Washington, D.C., places with already-flourishing tech scenes where it would be easy to recruit talent. Although Amazon also promised to put a smaller office in Nashville, the outcome was a stark illustration of how, left to its own devices, the tech industry would likely continue concentrating itself in a handful of already-rich cities.

How AI Could Change the Highly-Skilled Job Market
When most people think of the connection between technology and jobs, they think of robots and automation taking over relatively unskilled jobs like factory work. And thus, the biggest toll from these technological advances would be on already hard-hit manufacturing regions of the Rust Belt. But a new wave of developments in artificial intelligence may have a greater effect on high-skilled jobs and high-tech knowledge regions. The study by Mark Muro, Jacob Whiton, and Robert Maxim takes a close look at the potential of artificial intelligence--or AI--to automate tasks that until now have required human intelligence and decision-making. As they put it: "Unlike robotics (associated with the factory floor) and computers (associated with routine office activities), AI has a distinctly white-collar bent."

Diving deep into Africa's blossoming tech scene – TechCrunch
Jumia may be the first startup you've heard of from Africa. But the e-commerce venture that recently listed on the NYSE is definitely not the first or last word in African tech. The continent has an expansive digital innovation scene, the components of which are intersecting rapidly across Africa's 54 countries and 1.2 billion people. When measured by monetary values, Africa's tech ecosystem is tiny by Shenzen or Silicon Valley standards. But when you look at volumes and year over year expansion in VC, startup formation, and tech hubs, it's one of the fastest growing tech markets in the world.

Amazon is no longer a Seattle company. Here's what that will mean for future workers and its second headquarters
You could work for Amazon in your PJs. Amazon has more than 1,200 Amazon staff in the greater Boston area. BOSTON – Amazon isn't just a Seattle company anymore, and a visit to its offices in this university city explains why. Here, in an old Necco wafer candy factory in the formerly industrial neighborhood of Fort Point, Rohit Prasad oversees 1,200 workers developing Alexa, the company's digital assistant. Walls made out of shipping containers, a playful nod to Amazon's main business, and exposed brick echo the urban tech vibe of its Seattle headquarters.
